santa rosa. four mile visibility there with mid-60s today. a little rain to talk about in our seven-day. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. back now to talk about the presidential inauguration. the pomp and circumstance is tomorrow but today is the day that the constitution requires the president and the vice president to take the oath of office. it must happen by 9:00 this morning our time for barack obama to officially start his second term. washington is already abuzz. they are in the party mode. abc is joining us live from the mall in washington d.c. good morning. >> good morning to you, carolyn. you showed it a short time ago that there is a lot going on. president obama and the vice president over at arlington national cemetery. before that the vice president officially took the oath of office at the naval observatory. here on the national mall they are expecting a huge crowd tomorrow. crowds actually larger than both

presidents bush and clinton got for their second inaugural. >> president obama takes the oath of office today but the public swearing in is tomorrow before thousands on the national mall. he will place his hands on bibles once used by abraham lincoln and dr. martin luther king. >> i do swear. >> jobessen was sworn in this morning. inaugural festivities kicked off yesterday with a bang. kids had an inaugural ball of their own with performances by usher, members of the cast of glee and katie perry. yesterday was also a national day of service. the obamas joined americans across the country in volunteering.

>> final preparation are underway for the big public oath, the parade and the two inaugural balls. >> we want to make sure everything is as perfect as we can make it. >> at his first inauguration nearly 2 million people showed up. while they expect a smaller crowd this time, expect the pump to be every bit as big. president obama starts his second term with a 55% approval rating, his highest since 2009. but many say the country is headed seriously on the wrong track. fortunately for the huge crowd coming out here tomorrow the temperature is expected in the high 30s. that is a lot warmer than mr. obama's first inaugural. reporting live, abc7 news. >> thank you very much. coming up on a special edition of "this week." white house senior advisor david plouffe looks ahead to his second term.

here this morning the ferry building is ill illuminated in red behind me. the coit tower was lit up but it's off for the rest of the morning, it appears. but the city is decorated and fans are decorating themselves. we have video from yesterday when fans were buying anything red and gold that exist ted store at the college shop, nfl college shop on pier 39. one fan knows exactly what she will be yelling when the tv is on today on game day. and then get this. we ran into former raiders linebacker jeff barns. he was signing autographs and showing off his two super bowl rings. well, even he is excited for the 49ers spreading that bay area love. >> we know the 49ers are a great team and i'm happy that the 49ers are winning. if the raiders can't win, we want the 49ers to win plus the bay area. and that's what it's all about. >> that is what it's all about.

the lawyer for wide receiver michael crabtree said his client is cooperating with authorities. crabtree is being investigated for suspicion of sexual assault. a woman claims he assaulted her last sunday just hours after the niners divisional playoff win over the green bay packers. crabtree has not been arrested or detained. the 49ers say the issue will not be a distraction in this afternoon's nfc championship game. coming up next, people run for their lives during a shooting at a gun show, and it wasn't the only incident yesterday. and surf's up. the anticipation building for the first mavericks surf competition in three years. we will tell you which high profile big wave surfers are going to miss today's contest.

>> well, there were several gun shows all over the country for what was billed as guns across america day and accidental shootings happened at three of them. take a look at the scene in raleigh, north carolina after a gun accidentally went off. three people were hit by pellets. and indiana and ohio, accidental shootings at two shows hurt two people. no one was seriously hurt.

about 200 people showed up in pacifica yesterday to support individual rights and to voice their fear president obama will take away their guns. the crowd recited the pledge of allegiance that they say showed their love of country, but not the government. >> after a three-year absence the maverick surf competition is back. today is the day surfers from all over the world come here to tackle the waves. a surf advisory is still in effect. that could mean some major waves. abc7 news reporter sergio has the details. >> photographer kevin harrington caught some great shots of surfers out testing the waters in preparation for tomorrow's mavericks competition but getting the shots was an adventure. >> we thought were going to be trashed by one of these huge waves because they were just coming way up over your head and the boat just tips over. it's scary. >> they were aboard john lynch's boat. he will be part of the surf patrol this year.

>> being so close to the waves and the brakes and feeling the power and watching these guys. it's an incredible -- it's an incredible sport. you have to have some real guts to get out there and do what these guys are doing. >> the organizer of mavericks, jeff clark, was his guide. he was briefing the surfers who will be surfing what is expected to be 30-foot waves. mavericks is known for serving up some of the biggest waves in surfing. the competition should be fierce. >> when they do come, they come in sets of like ten waves. it's quite incredible to see this lineup out there. >> high surf is great news for mavericks, but it's also a warning for everyone else. just "before sunset" at association beach in san francisco some pretty big waves were crashing the shore. for amateurs up and down the coast the conditions got challenging. the coast guard and san francisco fire and rescue teams were called in to help six surfers struggling off ocean

>> we've been talking about the weather. we both like how mild it's been during the day, but at night it's still so cold. >> that's right. over a week and a half of temperatures below freezing in our valleys. once again, we are at 29 degrees in santa rosa. as we head outside this morning, you notice from the east bay camera looking over the bay. it is nice and clear and still out there, but the winds have picked up offshore. that has allowed for a railroad mild temperature, half moon bay at 59. live doppler 7hd this morning. we aren't picking up any rain. we will be looking at increasing clouds for the early part of the week, prepped on tuesday. then by wednesday maybe a little bit of rain. but we are looking at the end of the week to perhaps give us more significant rain. still above average for rainfall. about 115% of normal downtown. 47 in san francisco. good morning, oakland, 39 for you with 36 in los gatos and here's our numbers below freezing. in santa rosa 29, just at

freezing. 28 novato and 31 livermore and 30 concord and fairfield. down by the monterey bay. and 31 gilroy with 54 in monterey. the stronger offshore winds allowing for the temperatures to stay up. we are a little warmer this morning in san francisco pushes cooler by 4 degrees in novato and two degrees cooler toward the east bay. we will begin to see subtle changes in the days ahead. no spare the air. looking at a little bit of patchy valley fog. the high surf advisory again today and then things are shifting in the atmosphere, allowing for although the mild days, a few more high clouds as we head toward tuesday. so with that high surf advisory right through the afternoon, we are washing watching the northwesterly swell up to 20 feet potentially. up to 7 feet monterey bay and 8 feet san francisco and half moon bay. double barrel high pressure allowing for the offshore flow and the strong ridge in the upper levels of the atmosphere pumping the storm track well to the north.

this system will break down and as it does it will allow for the increasing clouds and a weak weather system by tuesday and into wednesday. between now and then numbers above the average. here's the way it is going to play out on wednesday. with this weak system to the north, ukiah, maybe a few light showers up in santa rosa. other than that you notice the cooler temperatures." numbers back into the 50s and by thursday with the partly cloudy day, that cooler air settles on in and perhaps the second system a little bit stronger into next weekend. how about mid-60s today? big sir 80 again in los angeles with 62 in sacramento. and back home low to mid-60s. a few high clouds. a beautiful day, 64 in santa rosa. average high 57. 64 in fremont. 66 in san jose. and yesterday you managed 64 degrees san jose. look at the 70s. santa cruz. a look ahead. cooler tuesday and a chance of rain perhaps on wednesday but the cooler air everyone feels wednesday, thursday, and by next weekend it could be pretty

welcome back, everyone. >> this morning investigators continue the search for suspects after one person was fatally shot, another injured near an east bay bart station.

it happened shortly after noon yesterday. people scattering in panic when shots were fired at a bus stop in front of the bay fair station in san leandro. a 40-year-old man was killed. a teenage girl also shot, but she is expected to be okay. investigators shut down the station for about six hours, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. a teenage boy is under arrest, but police are still looking for at least three others. >> you know that bart has an extensive video camera system, as does a.c. transit. we will be looking at whether or not there will be any useful video. >> so far investigators don't have a motive in the shooting. san francisco police are investigating the city's second homicide of the year. a 26-year-old man was shot and killed last night as he was driving near japan town. police say the victim crashed his black mercedes into a parked car at fillmore and post streets around 5:30 p.m.. he died at the hospital.

witnesses say the shooter got into a white or silver car and took off. details are emerging from that her hostage crisis in algeria. it ended with the algerian government launching an assault. yesterday morning. one american was killed and two others remain unaccounted for. brian ross has the details. the algerian army's third and final result recaptured the bp-run facility, but left many hostages dead, apparently executed by the hostages. -- or by the terrorists. in the middle of the sahara the final hostage death toll was put by officials at 23. >> for our people in algeria, for their families and friends, it has been and continues to be a distressing and horrific time.

>> at least two americans remain unaccounted for and one american has been confirmed as killed. 58-year-old fred of katie, texas. a suburb of houston. survivors said the attackers focused only on americans and westerners. including a large british contingent. >> we believe that there are five british nationals and one uk resident who are either deceased or unaccounted for. >> the good news was most of the the approximately 100 western workers were freed or escaped. algerian tv aired what had said was home video taken by one hostage as he escaped across the desert. among those who also got out was mark cobb, the manager at the facility. he's from corpus christi, texas. the algerian government said that 32 of the terrorists were killed and officials said they were heavily armed with automatic weapons and explosive pack suicide belts and were preparing to blow up the natural gas facility. as algerian tanks and special forces surrounded the plant, officials said they had no

choice but to go in with guns blazing, even after the u.s. and other governments had asked the algerians to hold off out of concern for the safety of the hostages. >> the algerians' position has always been we don't negotiate, we don't mess around. >> that was brian ross reporting. >> this year's president obama's inauguration, as you know, falls on the martin luther king holiday. mark matthews spoke with the world's foremost authority on dr. king. the question, if they could have met, what would the leader of the civil rights movement, who was murdered in memphis, what would he have to say to president obama about guns and violence in our society?

>> claiborne carson was just 19 years old when he stood on the washington mall on a hot august afternoon and listened to martin luther king describe his dream for america. >> four years ago he was back on the mall in the freezing call to watch barack obama take the oath of office. like many who were involved in what carson calls the movement, he wondered what now? >> now that he has the power of the presidency, what is he going to do to bring king's dream into reality? >> carson believes dr. king would urge the president to take on the harder, more complex issues underlying gun violence. >> the problem with violence is not simply a problem of availability of guns. it's a climate. it's a culture. >> for king it was an issue of social justice. >> you know, i think what he would point out is that people don't kill other people when they have hope. >> king would certainly call for gun control, said carson, but he also called on all americans to see themselves as part of one community. >> when do white americans care as much about the death of a black child as a white child? you know. would the response of the nation been the same if that had happened at a black school? i would hope so.

but as we know, the death of black children on a daily, weekly basis, doesn't seem to garner the same kind of attention. >> look no further than oakland, said carson. and he points to dr. king's message that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. >> he was saying that 50 years ago, but now we have to believe that. because injustice in one place can lead to terrorism in another place. >> these are the things that have to concern us for our own future, said carson. his latest book is "martin's dream." he held an open house at the mlk institute on stanford's campus, but wear website says they welcome visitors to see their collection of documents and photographs located in cyprus hall. in the newsroom, abc7 news. >> new this morning the group

flu season is sweeping the nation and now you can watch it happen in realtime on the internet. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom has a look at some free high-tech tools that can track flu cases right down to the streets they are on. it might even tell you who made you sick. >> i'm feeling pretty miserable. >> last week beat writer christina farr called in sick and she began wondering who got her sick? turns out there's an app for that. a facebook app called, help, my friend gave me the flu. >> it will scrape data from your social networks and look for the tell-tale signs, search terms like sneeze, cold, flu. >> in a few seconds she got a list of four likely suspects who posted about being sick. >> sorry guys, i'm going to be avoiding you the next couple weeks. >> calling facebook and twitter for posts about feeling ill, another app, germ tracker,

plots likely flu victims on a map. >> and people do say things on twitter especially to say i'm feeling miserable and mentioning they might be working from home. these apps can pick up on that. >> another app called flu near you relies on 40,000 volunteers to report every week if they have the flu. just click on any city. >> it will show you whether the flu risk is high or not and whether people around you are sick. >> the favorite comes from google. it shows who is searching for flu symptoms or remedies. >> people are asking how do i get a fever down or what kind of medications should i take for the flu and and google is updated every day. >> each paint a slightly different picture, but together they form a big picture that public health officials say can be just as valuable as the cdcs official numbers. >> increasingly we are recognizing you need everything. we need to be able to triangulate what the numbers actually are and that takes a

just a few. the cutting edge of science also involves ideas so complicated it's hard to wrap your mind around them. but one innovative program in the bay area is trying to make scientific research more efficient by making parts of it simpler. abc7 news health and science reporter carolyn johnson has the details. >> when most people see a stack of legos, you see this, and this guy sees building blocks of science. his campus used piles of them to construct their very own working lego microscope. >> the microscope essentially is made out of two lenses. the first one is here. >> they did need to fabricate a few specialty parts in the lab's 3d printer. a kind of computer easy bake oven that converts schools of snap-on objects like lens holders. the results, a working device

built to answer all kinds of scientific questions except the one you may be asking yourself right now, why build a microscope out of legos at all? the answer is a new program just launched at ucsf. it's a course designed to change the way scientists think about their work. the director says one of the goals is to make research projects more practice by focusing on the end user. >> and having them work together in this idea-based way. brainstorming ideas. it brings a new dimension to the way that science can be done. >> as a test case, the team was tasked with reimagining uses for cell phone microscope developed at the university of california. it's creators envisioned it as a way of diagnosing diseases in remote locations, but it's yet to be commercialized. to help the process, they brought in consultants, famed for work on the user interfaces like the original computer mouse.

scott helped hone the questions to a razor's edge. >> who might use it and how. >> they thought it needed a demonstration component. it might help teach science. a way to help students and people understand the inner workings of the microscope. hence the home plate legos microscope project. >> i think the discovery they had from talking to teachers will how you might use something like this is how do we demystify the science of microscope by. >> the students said the design process has already refocused their thinking and their appreciation for the creative process. >> it's especially been a lot of fun. >> right, right. >> and carolyn says the alternative design exercises already being employed internationally. a team from ucsf recently held similar brainstorming sessions with colleagues in beijing. looking for new ways to research

those breezy east winds allowing for the temperatures to stay pretty mild to start out. 54 monterey and 31 gilroy. cooler in parts of the north bay this morning. elsewhere very little change and we will begin to offset these very cold nighttime temperatures in the days ahead with more cloud cover. so a little fog. high surf again today and the mild days continue just for a few more days before the ridge begins to break down. you have heard about the high surf advisory through this afternoon with the current wave heights anywhere from five to eight feet. and in the deeper water we could see the swells over 20 feet. so that's great for the surfers. dangerous for the spectators. really dangerous for everybody. but we are being protected here with this area. high pressure lingering and shunting the storm track to the north. it will stay that way through tuesday. the averages will feature temperatures a also milder, a few high clouds from time to time. but then by tuesday the ridge

breaks down and the offshore flow is gone. that allows for a weak weather system to head our way, bringing perhaps a few sprinkles, but really more notably will be the cooler temperatures for everyone wednesday into thursday with the cloud cover and that cooler air settling on in. so get ready for that. it's going to be a bit of a change. we've seen these mild temperatures now for about a couple weeks. 65 in fresno with big sur in the mid-80s. 62 chico and back home low to mid-60s. a pleasant afternoon for palo alto. 55. 56 in san jose. look at the 70s returning for salinas, gilroy and santa cruz. so the accuweather seven day forecast keeping it milder. maybe a few sprinkles north bay. thursday partly cloudy and by next weekend it looks like we will be getting wet and that will bring the temperatures back to normal.
